The Landscape in Focus: The Transformation of Industrial Landscapes in Contemporary Art, Thinking and Science

Pavel Mrkus, ed. Krajina v pozoru / The Landscape in Focus: Proměny industrializované krajiny v současném umění, myšlení a vědě / The Transformation of Industrial Landscapes in Contemporary Art, Thinking and Science.
The collective monograph follows the international conference of the same name held in 2016 at the Faculty of Art and Design of UJEP in Ústí nad Labem. The book also reflects the international project of curators Milos Vojtechovsky and Dagmar Subrtova Frontiers of Solitude and the exhibition Epifanie – On the Frontiers of Solitude at the House of Arts in Usti nad Labem in 2016, whose concept was to point out the critical spots of disturbed landscape units in Norway, in Iceland and Northern Bohemia.
The chapters in the book were divided into three basic units according to different ways of thinking: Landscape and Man, Landscape and Scientist, Landscape and Thinker, Landscape and Artist. Creative and artistic works extend the scientific and artistic-historical approach (Rut Bízková, Iva Ritschelová, Tomáš Pavlíček). In his three chapters, Milos Vojtechovsky is gradually focusing on Koudelek’s series of photos Black Triangle, the Unique Sacred Cooperative of the SAD and the theme of epiphany as a revelation to another way of thinking, which he offers as a solution to the environmental crisis – the crisis of human values. Contributions by foreign artists (Layla Curtis and Patrick Langley, Peter Cusack, Paul Chaney), as well as the extensive text Searching for a New Story by Jiří Zemánek, dedicated to Thomas Berry, go beyond the local view of the devastated landscape of northern Bohemia and put the theme in a global context.
