Since 2019 Gerlin Heestermans has been documenting and exploring modernist architecture in Belgium under the name Toerist Modernist, now a non-profit. Rather than an academic approach, Gerlin finds it important to keep her work as accessible as possible; by sharing photos on Instagram, by organising interior visits, by curating walking routes etc. This also highlights the importance of the personal, as it’s the inhabitants who keep this architecture alive. In time, Toerist Modernist has assembled an informal network of likeminded owners, alongside a community of fellow modernism lovers.
Od roku 2019 Gerlin Heestermans dokumentuje a zkoumá modernistickou architekturu v Belgii pod názvem Toerist Modernist, který je nyní neziskovou organizací. Spíše než akademický přístup považuje Gerlin za důležité, aby její práce byla co nejpřístupnější; sdílením fotografií na Instagramu, organizováním návštěv interiérů, kurátorstvím pěších tras atd. Tím také zdůrazňuje důležitost osobního přístupu, protože jsou to právě obyvatelé, kteří tuto architekturu udržují při životě. Toerist Modernist časem shromáždil neformální síť podobně smýšlejících majitelů spolu s komunitou kolegů milovníků modernismu.

Gerlin Heestermans °1988, lives and works in Gent, Belgium
The aesthetics of modernism have long been a fascination and source of delight for Gerlin, and this only grew stronger when she learnt more about the movement during her art history studies. A few years later, she was taken on an architecture tour in Brussels by a friend, and was amazed by the many unknown modernist dwellings they discovered. This led to Gerlin’s new mission: to explore and document this heritage all over Belgium, highlighting the many original features that still remain. It was immediately apparent why this was (and still is) an urgent undertaking, as so many of these are under threat of demolition or renovation. The project became a non profit under the name Toerist Modernist and its output includes walking guides, photography, interior visits, location hunting and more.

Estetika modernismu Gerlin fascinuje a těší už dlouho, a když se během studia dějin umění o tomto hnutí dozvěděla více, její nadšení ještě zesílilo. O několik let později se s přítelem vydala na architektonickou exkurzi do Bruselu a byla ohromena množstvím neznámých modernistických obydlí, která objevili. To vedlo k Gerlinině nové misi: prozkoumat a zdokumentovat toto dědictví po celé Belgii a upozornit na mnoho původních prvků, které se stále zachovaly. Okamžitě bylo jasné, proč to byl (a stále je) naléhavý úkol, protože tolika z nich hrozí demolice nebo rekonstrukce. Projekt se stal neziskovou organizací pod názvem Toerist Modernist a jeho výstupem jsou pěší průvodci, fotografie, návštěvy interiérů, vyhledávání lokalit a další.
