Michal Koleček
Prof. Mgr. Michal KOLEČEK, Ph.D.is a professor at the Department of History and Theory of Arts at Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem.
Michal Koleček is a founder and guarantor of two-year master degree in Curatorial Studies and at the same time the Head of Department of History and Theory of Arts at Faculty of Art and Design UJEP where this course is successfully taught since 2007. Michal Koleček is also the guarantor and chairman of Subject-Area Board of the doctoral study programme in Visual Communication at Faculty of Art and Design UJEP.
Furthermore, Michal Koleček is a member of the scientific and art committees at Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at University of Ostrava and at Faculty of Education at UJEP in Ústí nad Labem, a member of Subject-Area Board of doctoral studies at Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology and at last, at the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University in Brno.
Michal Koleček deals with the history and theory of fine art and design with a focus on the issue of contemporary artistic expressions; curatorial studies focusing on the development of methods of contemporary curatorial practice and the socialisation of contemporary art. In the academic journals published in the Czech Republic and abroad, he mainly focuses on theoretical reflection of the latest movements on the Czech and Central European art scene with an emphasis on art working with a specific social context and using various tendencies of participation, performance and cooperation, at the same time placing these movements in a wider socio-cultural framework. In the years 1993-2000, Michal Koleček was the director of the Gallery of Emil Filla in Ústí nad Labem; in the years 1998-2000, he was the curator of the Soros Center for Contemporary Art Prague and in the years 2000-2002, he was the curator of Václav Špála Gallery in Prague. In the years 2022-2003, he worked as a curator of Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. In 2003, Michal Koleček was the curator of Czech and Slovak Pavilion in the 50th Venice Biennale in Venice. He has been a director and the main curator of the Ústí nad Labem House of Arts since 2016. He has been working as a main curator in the project LUNGOMARE ART in the programme RIJEKA 2020 – European Capital of Culture (Croatia).
Michal Koleček as a hosted curator in exhibition projects cooperated with National Gallery Prague, Prague City Gallery, House of Arts in Brno, The Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region in Kutná Hora, Gallery of Fine Art in the North Bohemian Region in Litoměřice, Centre of Contemporary Art DOX in Prague. In abroad these are Chelsea Art Museum (New York, USA), Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst (Leipzig, Germany), Kunst im Őffentlichen Raum (Vienna, Austria), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Rijeka, Croatia), Pori Art Museum (Finland), Kunsthalle Košice (Slovakia), Mücsarnok / Kunsthalle Budapest (Hungary), Galeria Arsenał (Białystok, Poland), TRAFO (Szczecin, Poland), Kunstmuseum Thun (Switzerland) etc.
